There's only so much time you can spend actually painting figures (or in my case procrastinating about painting figures) and playing wargames on a floral table-cloth, so Kuriyama and myself decided it was way past time for us to create a more suitable gaming surface.
It soon dawned on us that this was a non-trivial task, and as is the way of our people, that did not discourage us in any way, it just prompted the taking of photograps and the writing of blogs...
It soon became aparent that the first decision that needed to be made was the general physical style of the table. Since the time when I first started thinking of creating a gaming table, we've moved from playing mostly Warhammer Fantasy to mostly Warhammer 40,000. This meant the rolling hills, Dwarven mines, abandoned churches and so on were out, and something altogether more apocalyptic was called for.
Storing, moving, using and extending a single monumental surface seemed to be somewhat impractical, since the absolute minimum size for a tiny skirmish is about 2' square, but the ideal starting size would be an unwieldly 4' x 4'.
What we decided on, was to create a large 2' square central piece, and six 1' x 2' pieces. This allows a nice 4' table to broken down into manageable sections.
Basic Materials
The choice of materials was pretty much determined by price and availability, as usual, I toddled off to B&Q for a little look around. The primary material used for the base is MDF, as it's fairly strong and easy to work with.
